Hi Madeleine,

This is another great post - thank you for providing food for thought.

There has been some great research out there regarding this subject. The realization amongst many researchers is that a significant chunk of our challenge is related to not embracing our intrinsic motivators.

Previously, many people were motivated by extrinsic motivators ... level 1 includes survival needs ... level 2 includes external incentives (bonuses or other rewards).

Many people eventually find this life to be hollow. Some discover that the reason life feels hollow is that they never embraced their intrinsic motivators, including basic components such as sense of purpose, sense of mastery and sense of autonomy.

Daniel Pink's latest book, "Drive" describes this very well and is a highly recommended read.

I also drew a picture of it here - http://www.harrytucker.com/leadershipmotivation.html

Take care and create a great day!
